Maulana Masood Azhar declared a global terrorist
In a huge diplomatic win for India, the United Nations on Wednesday (1 st May) designated Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed(JEM) chief Masood Azhar as a “global terrorist” after China lifted its hold on a
proposal to blacklist him. He has been associated with and lead several terror activities in India including
the attack on the Indian parliament in 2001 and recently the Pulwama attacks where 40 Indian soldiers
very killed.
Since 2009 the Indian government has been trying to get the member nations of the United Nations
Security Council to declare Azhar as global terrorist but most of its efforts have been thwarted by China.
Finally on Wednesday(1 st May) due to pressure from the United States, China was forced drop its
objection to the listing and this made Azhar a global terrorist.
The UN Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and
security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. There are 5 permanent members, U.S, U.K,
China, Russia and France
What does Global Terrorist Mean?
Being declared a global terrorist have serious consequences for Azhar and his terrorist group J-E-M. All
member states will be required to freeze the funds and other financial assets of this individual and his
organization and also issue a complete travel ban on them. They will not be allowed to buy arms and
other materials from the member countries as well
Azhar’s designation as a global terrorist will force Pakistan to act against him and individuals and entities
associated with him. This will effectively mean total immobilisation of Azhar and shutdown of his
organisation and its institutions such as terror camps and madrasas.
