India’s best performance till date at the Youth Olympics

India participated at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos  Aires,  Argentina from 6 October to 18 October 2018. This was India’ best performance till date. The age group is between 14-18 yrs.

Among the 206 nations participated, India were ranked 17th on the medals tally in 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. India placed 46 athletes in 13 sports with 36 events, its largest contingent till now.

The country won a total of 13 medals – 3 Gold, 9 silver and 1 Bronze.

Some highlights were:

  • 16-year old Jeremy Lalrinnunga from Aizwal won India’s first ever Youth Olympics Gold medal. He was in the 62-kg weightlifting category. He lifted a total of 274 kgs.
  • Tababi Devi won the first ever youth Olympics medal for India in Judo and later also won a silver in the mixed team event.
  • Manu Bhaker, 16-year old star shooter, became the first Indian girl to win a Youth Olympics Gold medal. She participated in the 10-metre air pistol event.
  • Saurabh Chaudhry, also 16, won the Gold for boys in the same 10-metre air pistol event.
  • Both Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey 5s teams won silver medals in their debut.
  • 15 year old Akash Malik, a farmer’s son, became India’s first silver-medallist in archery at the Youth Olympic Games.
  • Badminton sensation, Lakshya Sen, who is also the reigning Asian Juniors champion, fell in the last hurdle to settle for a silver.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with India’s Youth Olympic Medal winners on 21st October and tweeted pictures with them. He tweeted “Proud of our Yuva-Shakti. Their success will inspire many other youngsters to shine on the playing field. Wishing these young stars the very best for their future endeavours.”

From 8 medals in the inaugural Youth Olympics eight years ago, to 13 medals this year, India have broken new ground at the world level. Proud Moment!
